Course description

EV FireSafe's Battery Fire Safety Induction series provide a short, accessible introduction to lithium-ion battery fire risks, enabling participants to recognise hazards, understand thermal runaway, and apply simple safety practices.

The Induction is designed as a scalable battery fire awareness and engagement module for organisations seeking to rapidly introduce lithium-ion battery safety concepts across their workforce.

Assessment and Certification

Assessment is approached through:
  • Simple summative knowledge checks
  • Interactive questions to reinforce understanding

Learners must pass all assessments to successfully complete this course.

Upon successful completion learners will be issued with an EV FireSafe Certificate of Completion.

Course content

Induction courses provide foundational awareness, including:
  • What is a lithium-ion battery?
  • What is thermal runaway?
  • Identify LiBs in your workplace
  • Working safely around LiBs
  • Identifying thermal runaway (and what to do!)

Target audience

This training is designed for large organisations looking to upskill diverse teams across single or multiple sites, and raise general awareness of the risks of battery fires in the workplace.

There are no physical requirements to complete this course.

Learners are expected to manage any anxiety or discomfort that may arise from completing this course.

Learners must have basic literacy and numeracy skills to understand text, images, graphics and videos. They must have access to a computer (preferred) and basic digital skills to log in and complete simple assessment tasks.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, participants will be able to:

1. Explain what a lithium-ion battery is and where they're found in your workplace

2. Identify the signs and hazards of battery fire and what to do

3. Apply safe storage, charging, handling and disposal practices

This Induction course provides a foundation for progressing into Red Card and EV Assessment of Battery Condition and other operational courses, building the essential knowledge needed for more advanced EV training.

Emma is the Director of EV FireSafe, a private company funded by the Australian Department of Defence to research EV battery fires & emergency response. She is also an operational firefighter.

Dan Fish

EV firesafe COO
Dan is EV FireSafe's Technical Specialist & EV safety guru. He started his career as a mechanic & became a full-time firefighter 20 years ago. He now has an encyclopaedic knowledge of EVs & high voltage systems.
